SHORT-TERM TRAINING COURSES IN MPA PROGRAM – Methods of research in social sciences

The pilot courses of the Master’s program in Public Administration (MPA) launched by the European Union funded project “Support for Public Administration Capacity Building in Turkmenistan” more and more involves international experts with interesting lectures. The next session of the pilot courses covered the MPA module “Methods of research in social sciences” presented by the project expert Dr. Annika Jaansoo. The training event was organized in the conference hall of the Academy of Civil Service under the President of Turkmenistan with participation of specialists from different partner institutions.

The aim of the short term online courses on MPA Program is to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed modules and get the expert opinion of the civil servants for prevention of possible difficulties in actual implementation of the program.

The training session started with active discussions about main challenges of conducting a research.  Dr. Jaansoo explained the meaning of a social science in general and provided several examples to describe foundations of the Science.  Then the expert presented the methods of research and discussed with the participants the application of each method in different fields. During the presentation, Dr. Jaansoo explained in details the Qualitative methods, including In-depth interviews, Focus groups, Observations, Open-ended surveys, Content analysis as well as Quantitative methods and its components such as Polls, Surveys, Questionnaires, and Manipulating existing statistical data.

The second part of the training session was practical where the participants were broken into groups and assigned tasks. Within a short period of time, the groups came up with concise presentations on the given tasks. Dr. Jaansoo noted the professionalism of the participants and appreciated their efforts.

At the end of the training course, Dr. Jaansoo made a short description of the next training session and assigned home tasks for each group. The presentations prepared by the participants will be discussed during the next training session.
